Disaster Recovery Initiative
Our Stay Connected program is a hands-on, one-on-one effort to help Hurricane Katrina evacuees rebuild their lives.
In the days immediately following the hurricane, our focus was on meeting basic needs – food, clothing, shelter, money.
Today, we’re helping evacuees rebuild their lives and obtain new housing, new jobs and a renewed sense of community for those who choose to make Houston home.
The program’s unique feature is the role of Service Connectors – evacuees themselves – who combine their skills in social work with their knowledge and appreciation of the historic and cultural heritage shared with those they are helping. These Service Connectors work directly with families in the Stay Connected program to ensure they are moving forward with their plans for housing, employment, health care and other critical needs.
